With Allan Gyngell
We are very pleased to announce that our guest speaker for the 93rd anniversary of the AIIA NSW will be the incoming National President of AIIA, Allan Gyngell AO, FAIIA. Allan will speak on the topic of:
Australian foreign policy: Does the public matter? Should the community care?
Foreign policy in Australia has always seemed to be an elite preoccupation: the preserve of policymakers, diplomats and academics. It impinges on public consciousness only in short bursts, related mostly to wars, terrorist attacks or high-profile consular cases. But for more than eighty years, the Australian Institute of International Affairs has worked in the conviction that the views of the people in a democracy matter. As the government prepares to release its foreign policy White Paper, the in-coming National President of the AIIA, Allan Gyngell, will examine the role of the public in shaping foreign policy in a world which poses challenges to Australia greater than any we have experienced since the Second World War.
Allan Gyngell is an Honorary Professor in the ANU’s College of Asia and the Pacific and a member of the board of the public policy initiative, China Matters.
Allan has had a long career dealing with Australian foreign policy inside and outside government, including as director-general of the Office of National Assessments, the inaugural executive director of the Lowy Institute for International Policy and foreign policy adviser to Prime Minister Paul Keating. He began his career in the Department of Foreign Affairs.
He has written widely on many aspects of Australian foreign, security and intelligence policy. His most recent book Fear of Abandonment: Australia in the World Since 1942, was published in April 2017.
