Join Christine Milne and Walkley Award-winning investigative journalist Michael West, tracking the rise of corporatocracy.
One day every three years, citizens get to vote. The rest of the time, their democratic rights are usurped by the power of corporations with their lobbyists and political donations. What might Australia be like in 30 years time if governments fail to address the threat to democracy from “Dark Money”?
Michael West is an investigative journalist whose work is focused on the Australian financial, business and government sectors, and adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, School of Social and Political Sciences. He is a Walkley Award winner whose career began on the Australian Financial Review. He founded the Margin Call column at The Australian newspaper, and worked for many years at News Ltd and Fairfax Media as a commentator and Business Editor of The Sydney Morning Herald. After two decades in mainstream media exposing the machinations of big business – crony capitalism, corporate welfare, multinational tax avoidance and big energy rorts – West went independent with michaelwest.com.au. Three years down the track, despite attacks from mainstream media and defamation threats from billionaires, the website has become one of the most influential voices in new media in Australia. Christine Milne is one of Australia’s most experienced and respected environmental, community and political activists, with a career spanning 30 years. Elected to the Senate in 2004, she was elected Leader of the Australian Greens in April 2012. Christine’s vision, her deep policy knowledge about climate change and renewable energy and her unparalleled experience with power-sharing minority governments led to the establishment of the Multi-Party Climate Change Committee and its successful negotiations to design the Clean Energy Future package. Christine is passionate about restoring strength and integrity to democracy which she believes has deteriorated to plutocracy with the rise of corporate power and campaign finance.
