Sydney Democracy Network will screen Pau Faus’ documentary “Alcaldessa” (Ada for Mayor) which follows Ada Colau (mayor of Barcelona) for one year, from her time spent organising the anti-eviction fight in Barcelona to the day she is sworn in as its mayor. The intimate chronicle – featuring Colau’s own video diary – and privileged access to the inner workings of a new citizen platform reveal a complex journey in which two prevalent themes are united: a historic victory illustrative of the political changes taking place in southern Europe, and the inner struggle of someone who fears becoming what she has so often questioned.
Introduced by Professor Simon Tormey (Head of the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Sydney), the film runs for 90 minutes and will screen at 5.15pm with Q&A to follow
Amanda Tattersall, author of Power in Coalition (Cornell University Press, Allen & Unwin) will chair a Q&A discussion session focussing on the creation and maintenance of new political and urban alliances, the Spanish example, and the issues the film raises.
Panel: Dr Amanda Tattersall, Professor Simon Tormey, Adjunct Professor David Ritter (CEO Greenpeace Australia Pacific).
