2nd Annual Festival of Democracy

24 – 27 September, 2014 | The University of Sydney

The 2014 Festival of Democracy featured four full days of talks, debates, workshops, art and cinema exploring the latest scholarly thinking and examining the formidable practical challenges confronting democracy across the globe. The Festival was open to the university community and the general public, with contributions covering the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and North America. Contributions to the Festival focused on the disaffection with political parties and the democratic process; the lack of public accountability of Australia’s extractive industries; corruption and political instability in China; the future role of renewable energy resources; the crisis in representative democracy; how democracy functions in the face of economic and social inequality; and the rise of anti-democratic regimes.
