This is part of the Democracy Futures Seminar Series, Wednesday 26 August 2015.
Based on his research for his book, Alex’s presentation proposes that the consistent and historic function of human rights is to inspire individuals to a new way of life. He will sketch a new theory and history of human rights from the perspective of a care for one’s own self. To do this, Alex will first demonstrate that throughout the human rights tradition there exists a belief that human rights are an indispensable means to work upon and improve the self. Lastly, he will also identify a few of the concrete techniques prescribed in human rights law and literature that aim to effect such transformations.
