Azim Zahir is a PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia and works as a research assistant and an affiliate member at the Centre for Muslim States and Societies, UWA. He has a Masters degree from the University of Sydney. He has extensive experience in the government and civil society sectors in the Maldives. He is an expert on Maldivian politics and electoral processes. His current research is on secularism, Islam and democracy in the Maldives and Bangladesh and looks at how the implications of the research bear on prevailing thinking on Muslim politics.
