Professor of Journalism Practice Peter Fray is the co-director of Centre for Media Transition and the head of the journalism discipline at the University of Technology, Sydney. He is an advisor to several media entities including the global News Integrity Initiative, a $14m fund to help foster civic discourse, Crinkling News, Australia’s only newspaper for school kids, and the Australian Science Media Centre. He is the former editor or editor-in-chief of The Sydney Morning Herald, The Sun-Herald, The Canberra Times and The Sunday Age. In 2013, he started PolitiFact Australia, the nation’s first stand-alone fact-checking operation. Before joining UTS in late 2015, he was deputy editor of The Australian. He is an irregular media columnist for Crikey.com and the first Australian to be a Tow-Knight Fellow in entrepreneurial journalism at City University New York. A former foreign correspondent for The Age and SMH, Fray has reported widely on media, politics, religion, national affairs and agriculture.
